“Tandem Tow HD Dolly” question in MotorHome Magazine

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

We were pleasantly surprised to see in the “Tech Savvy” section of  Motorhome Magazine recently, a reader inquiring about the suitability of a Tandem Tow HD Dolly for towing their car and a Harley as they would like to. The reply answer from Tech Expert Ken Freund was well stated and answered their questions completely.  As a result we were pleased to be the recipient of an order for a Tandem Tow HD outfitted specifically for the customers needs. The Motorhome magazine question and answer is reproduced below so that it may help  you with additional information, of course with permission from MotorHome magazine, with our thanks.

Question:

“I find your annual Dinghy Towing Guide informative, however I do not have a car that can be towed four wheels down, nor do any of them appeal to me. I’d like to buy a VW Golf TDI or a Mini S and put it on a Tandem Tow HD dolly so I can tow a car and my Harley Davidson motorcycle. Is there any reason I could not tow one of these front-wheel-drive (FWD) vehicles two wheels up?”  J D

Answer:

“The Tandem Tow HD works essentially the same as any tow dolly and the FWD models you mention should be able to be towed with the front wheels on a dolly. Make sure you order the optional brakes, as there will be a lot of mass to stop, and be sure that the combined weight does not exceed the motor-home’s gross combination weight rating (GCWR). Also keep total weight of your dolly and vehicles in mind, as some motorhome hitch receivers have a maximum rating of 3,500 pounds.”

Thanks to Motorhome magazine for allowing us to post this exchange and of course we don’t publish names of those mentioned.

If your traveling involves towing a car behind your motorhome, we suggest considering a Tandem Tow model for the additional ability to take along a Golf Cart or Motorcycle.  Having the additional “toys” along allows for more fun and flexibility in your travels. Please call us at 866-223-1016 or fill out the Information form under the ordering tab of the website and we’ll get back to you to tailor a trailer that will fit your needs.

We are pleased when customers are satisfied and enjoying their RV experiences. Below is an actual unsolicited comment, unedited except that names of course are removed.

” A little more feedback on towing with a Tandem Tow dolly.”

“Loaded with a Focus and both Honda 750s, full fuel and water on the daybreak, the Cat scale says steer axle 6440 (560 less than the limit), drive axle 13160 (340 under the limit) trailer axle 4720 (which includes the weight of both the dolly axle and the rear car axle, which is 280 below limit). I don’t know what the tongue weight is but according Race City RV’s charts I’m somewhere around 400 and the limit is 500, so I’m very pleased with those weights.

It drives wonderfully! The dolly and car track very well, and the “push” from passing vehicles is nearly non-existent. The MH handles better with the loaded dolly than with either the enclosed trailer or without towing anything.
I’m traveling with a friend and his Damon Challenger. We both filled up together this morning, drove the same trip and stopped for fuel again at midday. I’m pulling the dolly, with the bikes and car, with an F53 V10 ‘06, he’s towing nothing with his F53 V10 ‘07, and we both used 26.2 gals of fuel, 65 mph most of the time, 7.4 mpg.

I’ve got a thousand miles now with the Tandem Tow and I couldn’t be happier. ”
